Solar homes
Country homes already fitted with solar PV, batteries and low-carbon heating.
Solar panels have quietly become one of the most-asked-for features in rural property. A character home with an existing solar PV array — especially paired with battery storage — arrives with lower bills, a smaller carbon footprint and one less project on the list.
Our homes with solar panels for sale include cottages with roof-mounted PV, barn conversions with ground-mounted arrays, and farmhouses with solar plus battery, air-source heat pumps or wood burners. Many are rural properties where mains gas was never an option, so the owners invested in generating their own power instead.

A typical domestic array is 3-5 kWp and generates roughly 2,500-4,500 kWh a year in the UK, depending on roof pitch, orientation and shading. Paired with a 5-10 kWh battery, that can cover a large share of a rural household's electricity, with surplus exported through the Smart Export Guarantee.
Before buying, check who owns the panels (some older installations are leased to a third party under a rent-a-roof scheme), the inverter's age, whether the Feed-in Tariff is transferable, the MCS certification, and whether the roof was surveyed before installation. Listed buildings and homes in conservation areas may have extra planning conditions.
Usually yes, modestly — owned panels with a good EPC rating tend to help both value and saleability. Leased or rent-a-roof arrays can complicate a sale, so it is worth confirming ownership early.
The Feed-in Tariff closed to new applicants in 2019, but existing agreements can transfer to the new owner. Ask the seller for the FiT paperwork and MCS certificate before exchange.
They can, but listed status and conservation areas often restrict panels on street-facing roofs. Ground-mounted arrays, outbuilding roofs or solar slates are common workarounds — check what consent the existing installation has.
Not essential, but a battery greatly increases how much of your own generation you actually use — particularly useful in rural homes with heat pumps, EVs or an unreliable supply.
